OUR APPROACH

Finnish Minimalist Leadership

Nordic companies have a strong cultural advantage in solving two critical challenges that are especially emblematic of our time.

The first challenge is the constantly increasing competition for top performers. Due to rapidly increasing globalization, the competition for the best talent is not just local. A Finnish data-analyst from Helsinki receives job offers from Silicon Valley to Barcelona. The world has gotten smaller, the workforce is mobile and companies are competing for the best talent harder than ever before. Salary is undoubtedly one factor in attracting the best talent. However, the clearly differentiating factor between companies is their ability to provide the expert with an environment where they believe they can best actualize their own interests and talents and grow limitlessly.

The second challenge concerns the nature of future work: in a rapidly changing market environment, companies with rigid hierarchical structures are unable to react rapidly enough to emerging weak signals and incipient changes. When highly competent customer servants, experts, and specialists in various fields are required to seek affirmation from an authority for every decision, this not only slows down the organizational processes and diminishes customer satisfaction, but stifles innovation and employee motivation.

As we want to strengthen employee engagement and self-directedness as well as organizational agility, we need to rethink organizational structures and leadership.

This is why we believe a company culture centered around strengthening employee self-directedness is a significant competitive advantage especially in dynamic knowledge-work and customer service industries. Furthermore, with the growing effects of digitalization and automation on working life, this means aspects of most industries in the near future. Companies that revolve around supporting employee self-directedness are based on low or virtually non-existent hierarchy, high autonomy of employees, informational transparency, and a high trust in employees’ ability to make decisions without a need for heavy control and approval systems.

One central cultural barrier for the revolution of self-organizing companies is the status hierarchy that is often buried deep in organizational culture. When the void between executives and employees is deep, there is no ground on which self-direction to emerge. The very fundamentals of self-directed action require the ability to make independent decisions and the ability to voice differing opinions to anyone in any function of the organization.

This is where we here in Finland and the Nordic countries have a competitive edge: International value studies show that, in regards to strengthening the autonomy and dismantling unnecessary hierarchy, we are already there where the rest of the world is still headed. We live it.

We call this Finnish Minimalist Leadership.

With this concept we wish to convey the uniqueness of the nordic cultural backdrop on which organizations wanting to strengthen self-directedness can be born. Finnish Minimalist Leadership is the key to both a thriving organizational culture and agile, flexible processes and organizational structures.

The journey starts here.
